Liepāja University to merge with Rīga Technical University

At the end of February, it is planned to sign a contract providing for the accession of Liepāja University (LiepU) to Riga Technical University (RTU). Consolidation with RTU will take place from the 1 March 2024.

Consolidation process between the Liepaja University and Riga Technical University (RTU) has entered the final stage – mapping of the study programmes, comparison of structure schemes, alignment of the positions and re-signing of contracts with employees is underway. On 1 March, Liepaja University will become a unit of RTU.

Last May LiepU Council and Senate made a decision on consolidation with the RTU. The work has been done on both sides aligning the questions needed to enable LiepU as an RTU unit to function, providing students with even better conditions for higher education.

RTU confirms it will strengthen the engineering field in the region by combining resources from LiepU, RTU Liepaja Study and Science Centre and RTU Liepaja Maritime College, while Liepaja University Rector Dace Medne says: “Together we will develop all three strategic study directions, because our main task is to provide students with quality education and the region with the necessary specialists. Many challenges have come up with constructive solutions, but we have a lot of work ahead of us. This will strengthen both us and the society of the region.”
